Marion Rogahn of Fayette, formerly of Sumner, will celebrate her 90th birthday on Tuesday, Jan. 21.

Art Hemesath of Ossian will observe his 90th birthday on Thursday, Dec. 26, and will celebrate the occasion with his family.

His family would also like to invite friends, relatives, and former roller-skaters to join in honoring him with a birthday card shower.   

Art’s family includes six children, Cliff, Rick, Arlinda, Ron, Ann and Rodney, 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

From 1944-1970, Art was the proprietor of Art's Roller Rink in Ossian, where many people from around the area met and had fun roller-skating.

Berglund-Bounjour married

    Shelina Berglund of Kettering, Ohio and David Bonjour of Fayette exchanged marriage vows on Sunday, Sept. 22, in Kettering. The bride's father, Pastor James Berglund, officiated.
    Parents of the couple are the Rev. James and Shelly Berglund of Caldwell, Idaho, and Richard and Kathleen Bonjour of Fayette.
    The bride was given in marriage by her father, Shelina wore an ice white empire dress with a chapel veil and tiara. The bride's bouquet were purple larkspray and fusion roses.
    Shelina chose her sister JaLynn Berglund, as her maid of honor. Bridesmaids were Danita Rassmasun and Becky White, both friends of the couple. They were attired in flowy black dresses with purple sashes and pink heels.
    The best man was Jonathan Bonjour, brother of the groom. Groomsmen were Zach Fox, friend of the couple and Josh Hester, brother of the bride.

Joe and Ranae Icenogle of Conesville are pleased to announce the engagement and future marriage of their daughter Ashley Marie to Dillon Nathaniel Lee, son of Chris and Carrie Lee of West Union.

Ashley is a 2009 graduate of Lone Tree High School in Lone Tree and a 2011 graduate of Upper Iowa University in Fayette, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology and human services. Ashley works as a paraeducator for the Iowa City Community School District in Iowa City.

Dillon graduated from North Fayette High School in West Union in 2012. He is employed by Loparex in Iowa City.

The couple are planning a July 12, 2014, wedding at the Johnson County Fairgrounds in Iowa City.

Cecil “Perk” Shannon of Oelwein will celebrate his 80th birthday on Dec. 7.

To mark the occasion, his family will host an open house from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 30, at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Oelwein.

All friends and family are invited to attend the celebration. Cards are welcome, but no gifts, please.

Cecil is now enjoying retirement after being employed at John Deere for 40 years.

Heather Anderson of Hawkeye and Josh Tolle of Webster City exchanged vows in a 5 p.m. ceremony on Saturday, Sept. 7. The Honorable Judge James Birkenholtz officiated at the ceremony, which was held at Blank Park Zoo in Des Moines.

Parents of the couple are Mark and Joni Spies of Hawkeye and John and Deb Tolle of Webster City.

Escorted by her father, the bride wore an ivory corseted, drop-waist gown featuring floral and rhinestone embellishments and a ruffled organza skirt. She carried a bouquet of ivory Georgia roses and ivory hydrangeas with Tiffany blue accents.

…golden anniversary…

Richard and Ruth Balk of Lawler will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house on Sunday, Oct. 6. The event will be held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Starlite Ballroom in Lawler.

Light refreshments will be served, and music will be provided by the Jim Busta Polka Band.

Hosting the event will be the couple’s children, Diane (Carl) Daugherty, Dan (Katherine) Balk, and Doug (Karen) Balk.

All friends and relatives are invited to attend.

Richard Balk and Ruth Zweibohmer were married Oct. 5, 1963, at St. Francis DeSales Catholic Church in Ossian.

The Balks are retired from farming. In their retirement they enjoy traveling to area towns and auctions, as well as spending time with their eight grandchildren.

Richard and Ruth request no gifts, please, but cards would be welcome.

Lonnie and Mary Ann Brekke will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary with their family on Sunday, Sept. 29.  

Lonnie Brekke and Mary Ann Molokken were married Sept. 29, 1973, at First Lutheran Church, rural Ossian.

The couple have three children, Jennifer (Ignacio) Fuentes of Elgin, Jessica (Jerem) White of West Union, and Justin (Abby) Brekke of New Hartford.  They have also been blessed with seven grandchildren.

Area flu clinics will be available on the following dates at these sites:

Thursday, Sept. 19 – Elgin: Veterans Memorial, 10:30-11:30 a.m.

Friday, Sept. 20 – Oelwein: Senior Dining Center, 10-11:30 a.m.

Wednesday, Sept. 25 – Waucoma: Community Center, 10-11 a.m.

St. Lucas: Community Center, noon-1 p.m.

Thursday, Sept. 26 – Hawkeye: Community Hall, 10:30-11:30 a.m.

Tuesday, Oct. 15 – Maynard: Community Center, noon-1 p.m.

A flu shot is recommended for anyone over the age of 6 months. Only one flu shot is needed this year; it will last for an entire year.

Flu shots are $30 each, unless covered by Medicare.

Kidz Zone Kickoff tonight

 

Kidz Zone Kickoff tonight

A Kidz Zone Kickoff Party will be held at Fayette Community Church tonight (Wednesday) from 6:30 to 8 p.m. for children ages 5 through fifth grade.  

The night’s fun activities will feature a bounce house, games, face painting, and snacks.  

Fayette Community Church is located at the corner of Mechanic and State streets (next to the Gundersen Clinic) in Fayette.
