UIU sends 5 to Nationals

Upper Iowa University qualified five wrestlers for the NCAA DII Championships March 14-15 in Cleveland, Ohio.

The five Peacocks earned the honor by finishing in the top five of their respective weight classes at the Super Regional Friday and Saturday (Feb. 28-March 1) in Edmond, Okla. 

Carl Broghammer (197) and Edwin Cooper (149) both finished second, while Matt Paulus (133), Jordan Roths (141), and Logan Hopp (285) placed fifth. Broghammer and Cooper were ranked second at their respective weights, and both lost by two points to the number-one seed.

As a team, UIU, which came in ranked sixth nationally, placed seventh in the 17-team Super Regional with 42 points. Nebraska-Kearney won with 61.5 points. There were seven NSIC teams in the top 12, including St. Cloud State (third), UIU, SW Minnesota State (eighth), Augustana (ninth), Minnesota-Moorhead (11th), and Minnesota State and Minot State tied for 12th

Broghammer went 3-1, giving him a UIU-record 138 career wins. Cliff Thompson (1998-2002) set the old record of 136. Broghammer had a fall and two decisions in the tourney.

Cooper, who finished 39-3 on the year pinned two foes and won his third match by major decision.

Roths earned his place at Nationals with a fall, while Hopp and Paulus won by one and two points, respectively, in their critical final matches.
