PAC paid off, summer projects begin

North Fayette Sue Thoms informed school board members Monday that the district has paid of its $1.47 million bond for the Performing Arts Center (PAC) in West Union.

Members of the North Fayette community officially recognized the start of construction of the 15,200-sq.-ft. addition on April 10, 2006. A grand opening for the $3.2 million project took place in September 2007.  

Later, the school board approved summer renovation/construction projects. 

In addition to the previously approved West Union Elementary security entrance, board members approved a high school parking lot lighting project with Walvatne Electric in the amount of $41,000.

In addition, the small parking lot located north of the high school will be resurfaced and expanded to include an additional row of spaces. Leslie Lauer & Sons will carry out the project in the amount of $6,955.

Aylsworth House Movers and Cline Construction will also transport/remodel a portable building from Fayette Middle School to the high school in West Union in the amount of $23,075.  

Earlier, the school board approved the following fees for the 2013-2014 school year:

• Textbooks – Pre-kindergarten through grade six, $45 (no change); high school, $55, ($5 increase); computer damage co-op fee, $35 ($10 increase).

• Instrumental rent – Instrument, $47.50; percussion, $32.50 (no change).  

• Driver’s education – $325 ($25 increase).

• Breakfast & hot lunch (determined by USDA formula) – Students, $2.25 (10-cent increase); adult, $3.20 (20-cent increase).

• NF preschool tuition – $3.10 per hour for extra hours at West Union Elementary.

• Activity passes – Adults, $70 ($5 decrease); students, $30 (no change). 

In other business, the school board:

• Scheduled a public hearing for Monday, June 17, to discuss a 28E agreement (including whether to lease or deed the property just west of the high school) with Kaleidoscope Kids Childcare Center.

• Approved the purchase of the elementary “Reading Wonders” reading series in the amount of $49,000. 

• Approved the audit with Hacker, Nelson, and Co. in the amount of $19,500.

• Approved ICN technology upgrade for an estimated $15,000.

• Approved installation of additional security cameras at the high school north door and West Union Elementary in the amount of an estimated $3,000.

• Approved contract with Sean Leonard, varsity girls’ basketball coach. Noting Leonard’s lack of head coaching experience, board member Randy Tope voted against the motion.

• Approved contracts with Alex Stepan, grades eight and nine baseball coach in 2013; Robin Madole, girls’ golf coach; Matt Krambeer, assistant boys’ basketball coach; Stephanie Wagner, Safety Patrol; and Cindy Hinton, yearbook, all for 2014-2015.

• Approved the resignation of Tim Feldman, middle school football coach.
