Winneshiek Co. Protectors to meet tonight

Winneshiek County Protectors (WCP) and the Decorah Public Library hosted the screening of “Frac Sand Land,” a recent video produced by Robert Nehman of New Albin, on Wednesday, Feb. 27.
The 40-minute video documents the effects of large-scale silica sand mining in western Wisconsin. Interviews with residents of Chippewa County revealed very heavy truck traffic severely damaging the county roads of Wisconsin.
It also showed the dangerous dust produced by hauling and processing the silica sand. The sand is located near the surface of eastern Winneshiek County also.
Winneshiek County Protectors is organizing the public to request that the Planning and Zoning Commission and the Board of Supervisors establish a moratorium on silica sand mining in the county.
WCP will then seek an amendment to the Planning and Zoning ordinance to protect the roads, streams, and public health.
Winneshiek County Protectors, Inc. will be holding an organizational meeting at 7:30 p.m. tonight (Wednesday) in the Decorah Middle School cafeteria. The middle school’s address in Decorah is 405 Winnebago Street.
The election of the board of directors, as well as a review of the mission statement and organizing of documents will take place.
Organizing of volunteers to serve on seven working committees is also on the agenda.
Supporters of Winneshiek County Protectors are invited to attend.  Contact Lyle Otte at (563) 382-3137 for more information.
