With the recent release of “The LEGO Movie,” not to mention video games and the plastic-knobbed building blocks themselves, LEGOS seem to be at the very least maintaining their popularity with kids these days. They are even present in our local school system. Many area schools, including North Fayette Valley Middle School, participate in a program known as LEGO League, which begins to culminate in the fall with a regional competition.

“The core values of the program are teamwork, respect for others, and what is referred to as ‘coopertition.’ That is a combination of friendly competition and cooperating with others. Students also are encouraged to take what they learn from LEGO League and use it in their daily practices,” explained Julie Frieden, who is the talented and gifted (TAG) instructor at NFV Middle School.

The West Central boys’ foray into Class 1A District 5 basketball action was a short one as Don Bosco edged the Devils, 45-42, Saturday, Feb. 22, in Dunkerton.

The game was originally set for Thursday, but the rain, snow, and high winds caused a postponement.

When the two teams finally faced each other, the game turned out to be a thriller.

The Dons opened with a 10-7 lead at the end of the first quarter, but WC rallied to take a slim 24-23 lead into the locker room at halftime.
